"Why you still have symptoms on thyroid medication."

ISSUE 160, 29th August 2024

Welcome to all members of our thyroid family, new and old. It's lovely to have you here and a part of our thyroid family. πŸ€—

This free email newsletter goes out every two weeks on a Thursday and is the best way to keep up to date on all my work and hear directly from me without relying on social media algorithms!

I hope you'll find this issue inspiring, reassuring and useful in your own thyroid journey.

My aim is to share the information you need to live well with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's, as well as keep you up-to-date with what I'm doing in the thyroidsphere!

Thursday Thoughts

Many people with hypothyroidism / Hashimoto’s are on medication but still feel unwell. Why?

I have always said that getting well with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s is like piecing together a big jigsaw puzzle.

Why? Because this has been the biggest lesson of all that I have learned since being diagnosed with autoimmune hypothyroidism and taking my health back.

🧩 For so many of us, taking thyroid medication (to replace low thyroid hormone levels) is just one part of that puzzle.

🧩 What are the other puzzle pieces? I’ll list the most common ones…

  • Optimising thyroid levels (not just being in range). Which can include changing type of thyroid medication.
  • Unaddressed high thyroid antibodies.
  • Low vitamin levels (iron, B12, D etc.)
  • High cortisol / adrenal dysfunction
  • Exercise - moving enough but not overdoing it. Type, intensity and frequency
  • Poor gut health
  • Diet: food sensitivities like gluten or dairy, and blood sugar imbalances. Alcohol & caffeine. Dieting.
  • Stress. All the stress. Learning stress reduction and management.
  • Sleep hygiene and maximising rest and recuperation.

All of this is broken down, explained easily and has actionable steps in my bestselling book β€œβ€‹Be Your Own Thyroid Advocate: When You're Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired”.

Thursday Health Check-in

My latest test results came back! Thyroid hormone levels still optimal, Hashimoto's still in remission, Vitamin D and B12 optimal but ferritin... still low! It's finally back in range however, but only just. So the supplements and a retesting continues.

I am being referred to a specialist for my itchy and sore scalp causes... so I am hopeful to find out what's finally going on there.

Untreated β€˜Borderline Hypothyroidism’ Leaves Many Thyroid Patients Unwell

"They refused to treat me for my failing thyroid gland, being destroyed by my own immune system, and dismissed my concerns of feeling overwhelmingly fatigued, weak and unfit. At the end of the day on which this photo was taken, after walking around Edinburgh, I collapsed at the hotel, passing out from pure exhaustion. It took a good hour or so for me to come back around. It was really frightening."

πŸ’™ Self-Care Nugget: Reading

I feel great when I make time for reading, whether that is fiction or non-fiction. psst!! most non-fiction I read is on thyroid health, check out my previous book reviews here!

So I have been working on prioritising this for my mental health and wellbeing.

🌟 Other things I'm loving at the moment:

  • Cetraben Body Cream Moisturiser - A stay in a hotel triggered a lot of itching and irritated skin (whatever they wash their bed sheets in didn't agree with me), this using this has helped a tonne.
  • Hyaluronic Acid Serum for Face - This is still my go-to serum for my acne prone yet also easily dried out skin.

That's all for this issue of The Thyroid Family Newsletter, but you can find more information and support:
