"Goodbye For Now: Car Crash Injury."
ISSUE 115, 17th
November 2022

Intro -

Welcome to all members of our thyroid family, new and old. That's over 8,000 of you receiving this issue! It's lovely to have you here and a part of our thyroid family. πŸ€—

I hope you'll find this issue inspiring, reassuring and useful in your own thyroid journey. My aim is to share the information you need to live well with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's!

Thursday Thoughts

The phone line went dead. I stopped breathing for a second.

On 5th November, my husband and two-year-old were unfortunately involved in a car accident, being hit by a car while they were stood next to ours. I was on the phone to them when it happened. I heard it happen, the phone cut off and the line went dead. Panic ensued.

My toddler escaped with bumps and bruises thanks to my husband, Adam, having pushed his pushchair out the way so that the pushchair took the brunt and was damaged instead of my child. But Adam himself was still horribly injured. Taken to A&E and almost a week spent in hospital recovering from his injuries and subsequent surgery, he finally came home on 11th November.

Having been worried and stressed since the accident, not sleeping much at all (I am taking care of our 2-year-old and 6-month-old children almost entirely alone, and the eldest is reliving the accident through night terrors), overexerted physically, not eating very well, forgetting to stay hydrated, no time to really rest or recuperate, not on top of my supplements or any of the things that keep my thyroid condition well managed... I'm not in the best way.

I am constantly exhausted. Beyond exhausted, in fact. And we don't know how long this current situation of me taking care of my two young children alone, being my husband's carer and having no time for anything else, will last.

So, it is for this reason that a lot of my thyroid advocacy work will go quiet until things settle again for us and Adam's health improves. This may be my last email for a while. I know most of you will understand.

And if you do want to stay up to date with how we're doing, Instagram will be the best place to do so.

But for now, I'll leave you with this last email for a while and a reminder to hug your loved ones extra tight the next time you say goodbye to them. Adam and my child could have been fatally injured and I still can't shake that.

Thursday Health Check-in

I'm having a lot of flares at the moment and many thyroid symptoms have returned on a daily basis as I deal with the current stress. Reflux, fatigue, muscle pain, itchy skin, brain fog.

"Current Diagnosis and Treatment of Hypothyroidism are Both Fundamentally Flawed"

Paul Robinson, thyroid patient advocate, has written an article breaking down a recently released paper. It says:

"The paper points out several major FLAWS in current diagnosis and treatment...

1. A subnormal assessment of free T4 (FT4) serves to establish a diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Also, TSH is exquisitely sensitive to minor changes in FT4, leading to the adoption of TSH as β€œthe single best screening test for primary thyroid dysfunction for the vast majority of outpatient clinical situations.”

2. T4 is converted to T3 as needed, leading to treatment being changed to levothyroxine (T4) only.

3. TSH within its reference range represents euthyroidism (normal), leading to the treatment dosage of T4 being adjusted to return TSH within its normal range."

Are Thyroid Patients More Prone to Getting Sick?

Does having an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism reduce your immune function? In other words – do we get sick more easily than others?

Let’s look at why this may be so and what we can do to try and prevent getting sick so often.

This is where I share my favourite thyroid health supporting tools and resources each fortnight. 😊

Book: Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating

I personally hate being bombarded with weight loss solutions as a thyroid patient. Especially since this sent me in to an eating disorder 5 years ago. This book was a very insightful read in to diet culture and how to go back to eating intuitively.

Podcast Episode: Eat These Foods To Improve Your Mental Health by Dr Rangan Chatterjee

We know that poor diet can affect our physical health, but it can negatively affect our mental health too.

Recipe: Easy Ramen Recipe by Antoni Porowski

This recipe is naturally gluten and dairy free (as well as others) and is so wholesome, with a lovely, nourishing broth and meat and vegetables to boot. It's perfect for the cooler months too. It's in the cookbook I've linked above.

Read more on my approach to diet / dietary changes with thyroid disease here.

Test: Advanced Thyroid Function Blood Test

I'm going to retest my thyroid and vitamin levels again soon, using this Medichecks test, as I've been on a higher dose of iron supplement for a while and I want to check where that is, as well as how my Vitamin D is doing. It's so important to keep reviewing whether you need any vitamin supplements you are taking.

Self-Care Nugget: Unfollow social media accounts that are not helpful

You know the ones... they make you feel triggered, negative or are just all round unhelpful to you right now. Around this time of year, I find myself unfollowing the accounts that bang on about weight loss. Read why here.

Others:

  • My skin is looking the best it has in years, following years of severe, cystic acne. I still think my acne issues have been a combo of internal, hormonal health as well as how I@m looking after my skin on the outside. Right now, I'm still loving this serum as part of my skincare routine.
