Thursday Thoughts
I was sat in A&E on Sunday night wondering if my ankle was sprained or broken!
After visiting an inflatable park with my children earlier that day, I'd landed funny on it, heard a "crunch" and, as the day went on, couldn't walk on it. Swelling and bruising, I called NHS 111 for advice who sent me to A&E to have it assessed.
Six hours in A&E and confirmation of a strain and bones that had been "widened apart" (ouch!) I was finally home and in bed for 6am!
I am to wear my boot for 2-3 weeks before seeing if I can wean off it and build some strength in that ankle again, but the first week of wearing it has been frustrating enough. At least I've been able to rest up a little more than I usually would! I often find thyroid patients aren't the best at prioritising time to slow down and rest. How about you?
β
Thursday Health Check-in
Currently, my health (apart from the ankle!) is pretty good. I mentioned in my last newsletter that I've been having some acid reflux, so I've been concentrating on looking after my gut health (such a big part of the thyroid jigsaw puzzle) and pleased to say it's resolved for now. I revisited and reimplemented the steps I mention here.
I also need to retest my thyroid and vitamin levels again soon, to check where I am with certain supplements.
I also need to quit staying up so late and get back into a good bedtime / sleep routine! This is such a huge part of how I feel day to day and how well my thyroid condition is managed. Read more.

5 Ways to Be Your Own Thyroid Advocate
A lot of people are confused by what it means to be your own thyroid advocate.

4 Tips for Avoiding Self-Advocacy Overwhelm
When I was first diagnosed with autoimmune hypothyroidism in the summer of 2015, my head was spinning. I didnβt know what this diagnosis meant, what my thyroid medication was for exactly, and what to do about my thyroid medication seemingly not helping.
I would search forums, online support groups and websites for information, leading me down rabbit holes which quickly became overwhelming.
Countless 'thyroid books' were recommended and I began diving in to them, but soon found that I was feeling confused about the conflicting information and my stress levels and anxiety increased as a result.

"Not everyone responds well to standard thyroid medication. Levothyroxine didnβt make me better. I just felt worse and worse. Symptoms piled up."

Podcast Episode: The Therapy Edit Podcast. Episode: On 5 ways to take control of your to-do listβ
How many of us feel stressed by the neverending to-do list, which in turn can make thyroid health worse?
Finding ways to feel less stressed are soooo helpful when we have endocrine issues. This podcast episode really gave me some outsider perspective.

Recipe: Easy Ramen Recipe by Antoni Porowskiβ
This recipe is naturally gluten and dairy free (as well as others) and is so wholesome, with a lovely, nourishing broth and meat and vegetables to boot. It's perfect for the cooler months too. It's in the cookbook I've linked above.

Test: Advanced Thyroid Function Blood Testβ
I'm going to retest my thyroid and vitamin levels again soon, using this Medichecks test, as I've been on a higher dose of iron supplement for a while and I want to check where that is, as well as how my Vitamin D is doing. It's so important to keep reviewing whether you need any vitamin supplements you are taking.

Self-Care Nugget: The quote "If it won't matter in 5 years time, don't spend more than 5 minutes worrying about it now."
Also works the other way around; if it will be impacting you in 5 years time, give it some of your focus now.
